Nobility In the Philippines

Foreigners provide a different perspective about our country. I had an interesting talk with an American who said that we should look further down into history before we praise and admire prominent Filipino families.

He said, that families whom we consider to be nobility may have obtained their wealth from illicit behavior of their ancestors.

Stories in our history abound about families who are decendants of Spanish Friars, who bribed government officials into granting them large tracts of land, about scheming Indios who amassed great amounts of wealth and property.

Let us not forget the ill gotten wealth of notorious Filipinos in the past whose decendants are now benefitting from the moneys left by the previous generation.

Should we look-up to these families because they are wealthy? Or do we first examine the source of their wealth?
